2013 Housewares Design Award Winners Announced
A gourmet harmonic kettle, a one-touch automatic cappuccino machine and an ultrasonic aroma diffuser were honored as the “Best of the Best” during the 2013 Housewares Design Awards gala luncheon and ceremony, here.
The “Best of the Best” honorees were among the 12 “Best in Category” award winners presented during the awards ceremony at the New York Marriott Marquis overlooking Times Square. The ceremony also honored the 2013 Green House Award winner for eco-responsible housewares design.
The Nambé Chirp Kettle took top honors as “Best of the Best – Gold.” The Chirp Kettle, part of the Nambé Gourmet line, features a contemporary, angled stainless steel body with a 5-ply bottom for quick heating. The kettle signals the user with a distinctive harmonic tone.
“Best of the Best – Silver” went to the Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Cappuccino Machine from Jura Capresso. The touch of one button on the compact ENA 9 prepares cappuccino, latte macchiato, crema coffee or espresso.
“Best of the Best – Bronze” went to Swizz Style’s Jasmine Aroma Diffuser. The tabletop diffuser with interval settings uses ultrasound technology to transform water blended with essential oils into a fine mist.

HOMEWORLD BUSINESS® presents the Housewares Design Awards®. Sponsors of 2013 Housewares Design Awards are The Gourmet Housewares Show at NYIGF, Whitford Corporation and Gourmet Insider magazine.
An independent panel of design and merchandising experts convened in mid-November to judge the entries and select finalists, “Best in Category,” “Best of the Best” and “Green House” winners. Members of the selection committee assembled were excused from judging submissions for which they may have had any affiliation.
Housewares Design Awards finalists were chosen based on design believed to differentiate a product with unique appearance and/or function. The judges considered appropriate aesthetics, innovative materials and technology, user benefits (i.e., performance, comfort, ease of use, safety) and marketability.

2013 Housewares Design Awards Celebrates 10 Years Of Innovation
NEW YORK— Entries are open for the 2013 Housewares Design Awards as the industry’s premier design competition celebrates 10 years of inspiring housewares innovation.
The 10th Annual Housewares Design Awards will be presented during a special gala, January 29, 2013, at the New York Marriott Marquis overlooking Times Square. Awards will go to 12 “Best in Category” winners, three “Best of the Best” winners and the Green House Award recipient for eco-responsible design innovation.
“As the industry’s premier competition focused on design achievement, the Housewares Design Awards is proud to have been a catalyst the past 10 years for recognizing and raising awareness of the compelling housewares innovation that fuels this business,” said Peter Giannetti, editor-in-chief of HOMEWORLD BUSINESS®, which created the Housewares Design Awards in 2003 and hosted the inaugural awards ceremony in January 2004.
“The theme of this year’s special anniversary Housewares Design Awards campaign— ‘Inspiring Innovation For 10 Years’— underscores the competition’s founding mission to inspire and honor the industry’s determination to create unique, accessible products that improve the quality of everyday living. The theme also signifies 10 years of Housewares Design Award-winning innovation that has inspired scores of retail success stories and countless satisfied consumers.”
The 2013 Housewares Design Awards are presented by HomeWorld Business. Sponsors include The Gourmet Housewares Show at NYIGF, Whitford Corporation and Gourmet Insider® magazine, HomeWorld’s sister publication.
The awards ceremony on January 29, 2013, will coincide with the 2013 New York International Gift Fair, January 26 to 30, 2013, at New York’s Javits Center.
Product judging for the 2013 Housewares Design Awards is managed exclusively by HDA, LLC, which has assembled an independent jury of designers, merchandisers and design experts to evaluate entries and select finalists and winners.
The 2013 Housewares Design Awards will be presented in 12 categories: Cookware & Bakeware; Countertop Cooking & Beverage Appliances; Countertop Food Prep Appliances; Countertop Kitchenware; Cutlery; Floor Care & Cleaning Appliances; Gadgets & Kitchen Tools; Home Environment Appliances; Home Organization, Laundry Care & Non-Electric Cleaning; Home & Outdoor Decor; Personal, Health & Garment Care; and Tableware, Serveware & Beverageware.
This year’s competition also includes the fifth annual Green House Award for eco-responsible product design.
Judges will select five finalists and a winner for each of the 12 core awards categories and the Green House Award. From the 12 category winners, judges will select Gold, Silver and Bronze “Best of the Best” awards representing the pinnacle of the year’s housewares design innovation.
Reinforcing consumer awareness of the housewares industry’s innovative, value-added design effort remains a cornerstone of the Housewares Design Awards program.
“A broad media outreach effort in support of the Housewares Design Awards has delivered extensive consumer media coverage nationwide for the finalists and winners, resulting in a more prominent, influential profile for the housewares industry as a innovation leader,” Giannetti said.
Raising Industry’s Profile
The 2012 Housewares Design Awards campaign alone produced more than 575 consumer editorial placements with a combined 86 million circulation. Media coverage has been accelerated through online wire services with keywords and hyperlinks; and the launch of a Wikipedia page with a 3.5 million circulation. “Entering the Housewares Design Awards is a chance to gain valuable consumer market exposure and to highlight the unique design achievements that differentiate products and reinforce brands,” Giannetti said.
The Housewares Design Awards website— housewaresdesignawards.com— is a central resource for housewares suppliers, designers, retailers, media and other interested parties to participate in and learn more about the annual design awards program.
The easy-to-navigate site includes complete contest rules along with a direct link to the digital entry form.
The website also showcases an in-depth archive of all Housewares Design Awards winners and finalists (including images and product profiles) since the launch of the competition— plus a new “All Stars” section spotlighting the winning companies. The website will present the finalists for the 2013 Housewares Design Awards when the judging is completed in mid-November. The 2013 finalists also will be announced and featured in HomeWorld Business and on homeworldbusiness.com.
Products eligible for this year’s design competition must be introduced to the marketplace between October 1, 2011, and September 30, 2012. The deadline for entries is October 26, 2012.
The Housewares Design Awards jury will nominate finalists and select winners based on design believed to differentiate a product with unique appearance and/or function. The judges will consider appropriate aesthetics; innovative materials and technology; user benefits (i.e., performance, comfort, ease of use, safety); and market response.
Companies may enter as many finished products in as many of the competition’s 12 primary awards categories as they choose. The entry fee is $275 per submission.
All entrants may also enter the Green House Award division for an additional fee of $50 per product (a special value of $325 to enter both the core Housewares Design Awards and Green House Award). Green House Award entries must also be entered into one of the 12 core awards categories, although Green House Award finalists do not have to be among the Best in Category finalists.
Finalists will be notified after judging in mid-November and winners will be revealed during the January 29, 2013, awards ceremony in New York City.
Entry forms and complete contest rules are available at housewaresdesignawards.com. For more information on entries, contact Cathy Steel at (631) 371-4749; or email entries@housewaresdesignawards.com.

Viewpoint: Awarding Design Still Good Idea 10 Years Later
NEW YORK— We’ve all heard about business ideas scribbled on napkins during lunch. That’s exactly how the Housewares Design Awards program was hatched 10 years ago.
Rewind to that fateful day in 2002 at a restaurant in Long Island. A colleague and I were contemplating what HomeWorld Business could do to help the industry fill a January void when the Housewares Show moved to March in 2004.
The industry still needed an inviting, distinctive event to kick off the year, we figured. After some brainstorming— and a few napkins— we drew up the initial idea for the Housewares Design Awards.
Soul Of Housewares
Why a housewares design competition?
At the time, pricepoint-driven retailing was becoming so pervasive that it threatened to undermine the inventiveness that has been the soul of housewares development and marketing for generations. Despite limited breathing room, though, much of the housewares industry had remained diligent to create innovative new solutions that could stem eroding prices and fading differentiation.
“Design, Design, Design” surely seemed a more aspirational mantra for the business and its future than “Price, Price, Price.”
Housewares design leaders at the time could choose from general design competitions, but there was no comprehensive, housewares-focused design competition.
The time was right for the Housewares Design Awards.
Flash forward a decade later. HomeWorld Business is proud to have been the founder and caretaker of a Housewares Design Awards program that has evolved into the industry’s pre-eminent, independent design competition.
Growth Catalyst
Much has changed in the industry since the very first Housewares Design Awards ceremony in January 2004 at New York’s Gotham Hall. One constant, however, is the central role design innovation plays as a catalyst for growth in housewares.
The Housewares Design Awards program has accepted more than 2,700 entries, nominated 585 finalists and crowned 119 winners. That some of the highest entry totals have come in leaner economic years is a testament to the industry’s creative determination.
With that, we invite the industry to enter the 2013 Housewares Design Awards and partake in a 10th anniversary celebration that figures to direct the spotlight even brighter on the design achievement helping to lift the value of the industry.
Inspiring Innovation
Beyond the marketing advantages enabled by winning a prestigious Housewares Design Award, entrants also vie for a chance to showcase their products to millions of consumers. The 2012 Housewares Design Awards campaign alone produced more than 575 consumer editorial placements with a combined 86 million circulation. Coverage in 2013 will be pushed to even higher levels with the help of increased social media action.
The theme of the 2013 Housewares Design Awards— “Inspiring Innovation for 10 Years”— proudly signifies the program’s role in promoting innovative design. It also underscores the retail success and consumer satisfaction inspired by many of the entries, finalists and winners.
With the support of the program’s sponsors— including The Gourmet Housewares Show at NYIGF and Whitford Corporation— 2013 Housewares Design Awards winners will be crowned January 29, 2013, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, home to the awards gala since 2005. See the 2013 Housewares Design Awards brochure in this issue or go to www.housewaresdesignawards.com for competition rules and entry details.
Thanks to the industry’s commitment to innovation, the Housewares Design Awards turned out to be a good idea.
Who knows? The ideas for some of this year’s prospective winners might have started as scribbles on napkins.
