Magpie USA, Inc.

Stainless Steel Salad Set

Magppie is about products for people who love food,” said Hampden Mepham, president of Magppie USA.

Magppie, a design-driven brand for the premium home accessories market, was launched in 2000. The Indian enterprise is an offshoot of a 30-year-old family-run business of rolling stainless steel.

Magppie started its U.S. operations in 2006. It positions its tabletop product toward higher-end specialty and gourmet stores.

Magppie’s product lines have been created by designers of international repute such as Karim Rashid, Michael Graves, Roberto Giacomcci, Harry Paul and Kavi Pradeep T., among others.

Many Magppie creations have been acknowledged as highly prized collector’s items by international museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).

Magppie was the first stainless steel home accessories brand to be launched in India. It is also one of the first companies from Asia to go global as a brand in lifestyle home products. In addition to the U.S., Magppie was successfully launched in Italy, Scandinavia, Greece, Japan and South Africa. This year, it is looking forward to launching its products in over 12 countries.

Magppie’s products include flatware, tabletop, lifestyle, artifacts and its jewelry line, Emozioni. Be it using stainless steel or combining steel with bone china or glass, the company aims to delight customers with something that adds to their lifestyle.

“All good design elicits emotion,” Mepham said. “Magppie’s design philosophy is about the marriage of function and emotion.”

Mepham said that the company’s Stainless Steel Salad Set, which won Best in Category in Tabletop at the Housewares Design Awards, is a perfect example of the company’s design mantra. It was designed by young French designer Romain Vauchez.

“It is a product that is very unique in its design, and at the same time, it is very practical as far as use and storage,” Mepham said. The stainless steel bowl features a plastic cover that makes it easier for consumers to return a salad to the refrigerator or to transport it to a dinner gathering. The cover also keeps the food protected and fresh while entertaining outside.

The cover also functions as a stand to keep the bowl from sliding, Mepham said. It features grooves to hold the stainless steel servers, and comes in seven colors: orange (light and dark shades), red, green, blue, black and white.

The benefit of stainless steel is that it is completely food safe, added Mepham, and won’t stain or discolor.

Another unique feature of the Magppie salad set is that it can be easily stored, even in a small footprint, Mepham said.

“With overall design, it’s about trying to add products that help add meaning to people’s lives,” Mepham said. The designers don’t just look at creating functional products, rather “products that people would love to live with.”
