Max Heater Fan

Swizz Style Inc.’s Max Heater fan won a 2008 Housewares Design Award for home environment electrics.

With the product, Swizz Style sought not to design a fan so much as a “friend” for the consumer, someone they would enjoy spending time with. The heater fan has three “legs” on which is resting a big “body.”

“We try to develop a form or shape that is totally different from others, and which is really appealing,” said Martin Stadler, CEO of the company.

“That’s also why it has a name. We want to give them a personality.”

Children could very much have an influence on the purchase of Max Heater and the design of some of Swizz Style’s other products, Stadler said. This could help make the product more than seasonal.

Another influence for the design of the Max Heater is a mask worn in certain fighting sports in Asia. The grill of the fan is designed to represent one of these masks.

Another benefit of this design was to create a grill that was suitable at preventing people from being able to see inside the heater fan.

The heater fan also was designed for simplicity. It has two heat settings, a high and a low, and a fan setting, which creates a breeze; it is not a big fan at all.

“The easier it is to use, the more likely people will buy it,” Stadler said. “We don’t want them to have to read a big instruction booklet.”

With its red and white finish and cartoon-like shape, Max Heater is so different from most home environment products, that some may not even be able to recognize it for what it is if it is not in a package. The reigning trend in home environment continues to leverage the trend of small appliances, among other product categories—namely professional-looking metal finishes, with feature-rich products packages.

In that world, a Max Heater can be a breath of fresh air.
