Flip-Top Cocktail Shaker

Barware at the Fifth Annual Housewares Design Awards, represents the first product in a line of Rabbit barware from the company, said Metrokane president Riki Kane. The product’s name will be changed later this year to include the Rabbit brand.

The Flip-Top Cocktail Shaker does away with the usual separate strainer and lid and only features two parts, unlike other shakers, which have three or more parts, explained Kane. The double wall stainless steel shaker opens and closes with the touch of a finger and can be shaken with one hand.

“It’s an idea that’s revolutionary and represents an improvement in a product like this. The idea that you can shake it with one hand and you just flip the top— it’s just not something you’ve ever seen before,” said Kane.

The main design challenge Metrokane’s marketing director Bob Larimer and designer Ed Kilduff faced was working to perfect the unique mechanism in the flip-top; the gasket needed to get locked so that it created a complete, watertight seal, said Kane. After two years of development, the Flip-Top was born.

The Flip-Top Cocktail Shaker’s design and functionality both appeal to at-home bartenders, according to Kane. “When people are entertaining, a lot of that is about showing off. A one-handed cocktail shaker is something to talk about. It’s something to have fun with at a party. People are always looking for the next new thing,” she said.

The cocktail shaker follows Metrokane’s overall design philosophy, according to Kane: the product needs to be unique, it has to have a beautiful, graceful form, it has to have great packaging presentation and it has to be priced right.

She added: “Visually, the Flip-Top Cocktail Shaker is beautiful. Everything we do has to be graceful. If you look at the Metrokane line, it’s all about detail, and detail is definitely part of the Flip-Top. It has to have a beautiful shape, it has to have the right material, the right finish, the right detail. That’s what we strive for.”

Metrokane is currently working on “the next generation” of Flip-Top Cocktail Shakers, said Kane, in plastic, which will be targeted toward mass merchants.
