Fresh Air Odor-Free Kitchen Compost Collector

This year's Green House Award went to Full Circle for its Fresh Air Odor-Free Kitchen Compost Collector. It should come as no surprise to those who are familiar with Full Circle's green focused home product design philosophy, which emphasizes environmentally conscious design in stylish, sustainable and functional cleaning tools for consumers looking to recycle, help the environment and live a greener lifestyle.

"It is a kitchen countertop composter, so it allows you to put your scraps in before you take them out to the trash. It's environmentally friendly in a few ways and it promotes composting because it makes the job a lot easier and cleaner," said Heather Tomasetti, Full Circle co-founder.

The company's Fresh Air Odor-Free Kitchen Compost Collector tackles a common odor problem with many composters that are used in the kitchen. "Most of the composters on the market use filters but there's no oxygen flowing," said Tomasetti.

Most sealed compost containers on the market promote anaerobic decomposition, which causes food to rot quickly and grow bacteria. The smell normally associated with compost containers, known as off-gassing, occurs when the bacteria builds up. Charcoal filters, the company noted, do little to prevent these smells.

The Fresh Air Odor-Free Kitchen Compost Collector design features a unique wind flume system that allows oxygen to flow all around the waste bag. Since the waste bag is ASTM D6400 certified compostable, it is also breathable. This allows heat and moisture to escape which reduces bacteria build-up and odor. This promotes aerobic decomposition, which means that food decomposes more slowly and stays drier on the kitchen counter. The oxygen allows the scraps to stay drier and the result is said to be less mess, less odor and no flies.

The sleek design of the Fresh Air aids in the compost collector's green function. It appears to be a sealed container, but unlike regular compost crocks, the Fresh Air allows oxygen to easily flow through the consumer's organic kitchen waste and prevent less odors. The compact shaped collector, too, is designed to fit a kitchen's space without looking too bulky or obtrusive and so it fits in to smaller living spaces as well.

In addition, Full Circle's product packaging aids in educating consumers on becoming more environmentally conscious by composting. The colored box features tips on composting, what can be composted and how to find more information. It also comes with five compostable waste bags to get the consumer started. Educating consumers on green cleaning practices is also key, as a growing consumer base might be interested in going "green and clean" in the home, kitchen or garden but are unsure of how to start or what products adhere to environmentally sound practices.

Full Circle's Fresh Air Odor-Free Kitchen Compost Collector also stays true to sustainable and renewable design and the company's cleaner manufacturing processes as well, since the product itself adheres to eco-friendly practices. "It is also made with partially recycled plastic. It's a very clean system," added Tomasetti.
